News Story of the Week
This week brings a look again at pollution in China with a story from the Guardian. So despite all the talk of China winning the battle for Green Energy (which I don’t believe), China’s carbon dioxide emissions increased more than any other country in the world. China’s total emissions are now greater than Europe, Africa, Latin America, and South America COMBINED.
I know I’ve talked about pollution in China before (here and here), but the piece I had missed is that this year China’s emissions grew faster than their economy, even though China claimed that it met all of it’s goals.

Here I quote:”China’s total emissions are now greater than Europe, Africa, Latin America, and South America COMBINED.”
It is not exactly accurate to say so. If you consider the 1.3 billion people in China, you will see the average emission per capita is lower than most countries.
What is the total emissions of US by the way? And the average emission per capita?
I update the facts:
China’s annual emission of CO2 is 2.893 billion tons, 2.3 tons per capita.
America’s annual emission of CO2 is 5.41 billion tons, 20.1 tons per capita.
Not sure which year those numbers are from, according to the Energy Information Administration, China emitted 7.710 million tons, and the US emitted 5.424. The story behind these numbers is that China increased emissions by 13%, while the US reduced emissions by 7%. Behind the US numbers is the economic downturn, but I’m not sure what is behind China’s just yet.
Also, if you really want to be mad at a country Qatar emits 40 tons per capita.
