IN MEMORY OF ZHANG QING

China Change, January 18, 2022

This mini-documentary, filmed and edited by Ai Xiaoming and re-edited and subtitled by China Change, depicts Zhang Qing’s first visit to her husband Guo Feixiong in Meizhou Prison. It is also a snapshot of the life of Zhang Qing and her two children in 2007 and 2008 in Guangzhou.

Guo Feixiong (aka Yang Maodong) is a pioneer of the rights defense movement in China which began in the early 2000s. He was imprisoned from 2006 to 2011, and again, from 2013 to 2019, suffering brutal torture and inhumane treatment.

His wife Zhang Qing fled China with their two children to the United States in early 2009.

A free citizen, Guo Feixiong was illegally blocked from leaving China on January 28, 2021 at Shanghai Pudong Airport. He was attempting to visit his wife who, by then, was terminally ill. He was detained again in early December 2021 and on January 12, police in Guangdong issued a notice of his formal arrest and charged him with “inciting subversion of state power.”

It is part of China’s effort to further tighten control leading up to the 2022 Winter Olympics, which will open on February 4, 2022.

Zhang Qing died on January 10, 2022, in Germantown, Maryland.
